Local shops

Local shops

The town has three large car parks and a few smaller ones. There is a mix of department stores, boutiques, some specialist shops and craft shops. There is also a variety of newsagents, stationary stores and food shops.

Dear Old Woolworths!

It was a sad day last month for the people of St Albans when one of their beloved shops, Woolworths, closed for the last time.

In a world full of plastic toys, it’s nice to feel the quality of...

This is the slogan of Little Wonders, the toy store that has deservedly won the 2009 Retailer of the Year award. It is one of the few specialist shops around that has a vast stock of original, ethical and high-quality toys. This little gem is located in the Maltings precinct. Their wooden toys, tables, chairs, games etc are bright, solid and have that nostalgic ‘forever yours’ feel about them.

Farewell to Borders Bookstore

On August 9th, Borders Bookstore in Colney Fields (south of St Albans) will close down. It has been operating here since April 2005 and has Starbucks Café and Paperchase on its premises. These too will clear out as New Look fashion ftore prepares to move in.

Welcome back to Starbucks and a brand new New Look!

In August this year, we experienced the closure of Borders Bookstore in Colney Fields Retail Park. Along with that, the popular Starbucks Café closed too. This weekend, the fashion store, New Look has opened in its place.

A Pound a Bowl – St Albans

When one door closes, another one opens; but not in the St Albans! In recent times, St Peters Street has witnessed so many closures and few openings. However, Tescos has moved into the old Woolworth premises and Poundworld has opened up where Tescos used to be.

New shops in the town centre

The recession has had a negative effect on many of St Albans shops. Woolworths was the first to go and many others like Tchibo, Jaeger and West One have followed. However, it is not all doom and gloom in St Albans town centre. Today, I came across three new stores.

Wilco Johnson Band and Glenn Tilbrook at the Alban Arena March...

The Alban Arena is a venue with a rich history of welcoming touring acts, some of which have gone on to world-wide fame - such as Dire Straits, who played there in 1978. I saw the legendary Rory Gallagher there in 1988, more recently The Waterboys and The Gorillaz have graced the stage. It is maybe a sign of the times that more tribute bands than original artists perform there these days. So when two of the UKs most respected musical artists were coming to the Alban Arena it was likely to be an evening not to be missed!
