Shopping

St Albans is not just good for its choice of shops but for the unique atmosphere it provides for shoppers. Traders have been coming here for centuries and many of the shop buildings show their age in the beautiful ‘crooked’ architecture! Markets take place in the city centre on Tuesdays and Saturdays. There is a farmers market on the second Sunday of every month.

When one door closes, another one opens; but not in the St Albans! In recent times, St Peters Street has witnessed so many closures and few openings. However, Tescos has moved into the old Woolworth premises and Poundworld has opened up where Tescos used to be.

This is the slogan of Little Wonders, the toy store that has deservedly won the 2009 Retailer of the Year award. Wilco Johnson Band and Glenn Tilbrook at the Alban Arena March...

The Alban Arena is a venue with a rich history of welcoming touring acts, some of which have gone on to world-wide fame - such as Dire Straits, who played there in 1978. I saw the legendary Rory Gallagher there in 1988, more recently The Waterboys and The Gorillaz have graced the stage. It is maybe a sign of the times that more tribute bands than original artists perform there these days. So when two of the UKs most respected musical artists were coming to the Alban Arena it was likely to be an evening not to be missed!
