There are numerous entertainment venues scattered around the city. From arts, to theatre, to nightclubs and pub rock, there is plenty to enjoy. Entertainment on the streets (buskers) creates a unique atmosphere on weekends.

Upcoming events at the abbey theatre

St Albans is the city where it all happens! Who needs London’s West End when we have it all here at home. In the coming months, there is a lot on offer to those who love entertainment and a few hours of escapism!

Fireworks 7th November in Verulamium Park

I love fireworks, simple as that. I can't get enough of them and the annual display at Verulamium Park is always excellent. Luck favoured the brave and the evening was still and crisp. The rain held off till later in the evening allowing for one of my favourite displays for some years.

Playing Faustus – OVO Theatre St Alban

Last week, I attended Playing Faustus, a play written and directed by local writer, Imogen de la Bere. Clever, funny and really well written, this 'play within a play' captivated me from start to finish.

Music on the streets of St Albans!

On a crisp Saturday morning, if you wander down French Row in St Albans, you might find a bearded man wearing a cap and strumming his guitar. In front of him is a sign which reads ‘Leukemia Busters’. I wanted to find out more about this man known as Breezy…

Things I Know to be True – Abbey Theatre, St. Albans, May 3-11 2019

Things I Know to be True, by the critically acclaimed playwright Andrew Bovell in conjunction with Frantic Assembly theatre company, is the touching, funny and visceral next production by the Company of Ten. It is a complex and intense portrait of the mechanics of a family, and a marriage, through the eyes of four siblings struggling to define themselves beyond their parents’ love and expectations.

New hope for the Odeon on London Road

After years of stalled plans and failed planning applications, St Albans Odeon is now in the hands of James Hannaway - the person who restored the wonderfully successful Rex cinema in Berkhamsted. If the money can be found, there is a fighting chance that we could have the Odeon up and running in similar style. There is nothing the people of St Albans would like better than simply to have their cinema back and this is the chance to do it.

St Saviour’s Sensational Sounds

If there is any group that St Albans can be proud of, it's the St Albans Symphonic Orchestra. Last weekend, they performed four great orchestral pieces, with Bjorn Bantock as their new principal conductor. The church was filled...

Wilco Johnson Band and Glenn Tilbrook at the Alban Arena March...

The Alban Arena is a venue with a rich history of welcoming touring acts, some of which have gone on to world-wide fame - such as Dire Straits, who played there in 1978. I saw the legendary Rory Gallagher there in 1988, more recently The Waterboys and The Gorillaz have graced the stage. It is maybe a sign of the times that more tribute bands than original artists perform there these days. So when two of the UKs most respected musical artists were coming to the Alban Arena it was likely to be an evening not to be missed!
