February 2010 023Have you ever considered fostering a cat? I have just seen Poppy, a beautiful cat who needs a loving home. Poppy has been rescued by the St Albans Cat Protection and is just one of many stray cats who need a caring family.

However, as St Albans CP are dependant on volunteers, fosterers and financial help, they are now on ‘amber alert’ as they cannot take in any more cats. They say ”All our foster pens are full up. We can only take in as many cats as we have volunteers with pens to take them in.”

Debra of CP St Albans states, “The more cats we have, the higher the vets bills.” Debra and collegues are holding a fundraising dinner to raise money for their heated pens. The dinner will be held in the Savanna Restaurant of the Black Lion Hotel on 28th September. Tickets are £35 and include a welcome drink, 3 course meal, coffee and entertainment, followed by a silent auction. Sounds good? Then phone Linda on 01727 825306 or email stalbanscp@hotmail.co.uk. Their website provides a great deal of information including details of Poppy and other cats awaiting fosterers, www.stalbans.cats.org.uk

As a cat owner myself, I would say “Go for it!” We did and have never looked back since.

buskers_redindiansIn this current climate of recession, residents of St Albans were happy to have the opportunity to visit the top attractions for free! There were numerous themed guided walks / tours available e.g. Ghost walk, Crime and Punishment walk and the Cathedral Tower Tours. The Abbey also held an exhibition of the vestments. Here you had the opportunity to see the amazing handwork close up as well as speak to the ladies who were responsible for some of them.

Those who were at the Abbey around Saturday lunchtime would have been fortunate enough to encounter the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, St Albans Choir and soloists rehearsing for their evening concert.

Restaurants took part by offering discounts or free wine and desserts with meals. Attractions such as Redbournbury Water Mill, The Roman Theatre and The Clock Tower were free to enter.

This weekend was well worth the visit, even if it’s to sit by the clock tower, watch the people in droves walk around our historic city and listen to the music of the buskers.
