Next Saturday, I will be enjoying ‘old meets new’ when the St Albans Symphony Orchestra, performs a musical journey under their new conducter Bjorn Bantock.

The orchestra will play well known and loved pieces like Dvorak’s Symphony No 9 (my favourite!), Debussy’s Prelude a l’apres-midi d’une faune, Smetana’s Moldau and Prokofiev’s great ballet pieces from Romeo and Juliet (Suite 2).

This is Bjorn Bantock’s debut performance with SASO. He stated, ”It’s hard to think of a better combination of favourite symphonic works with which to start a new season.” Bjorn hopes that as many people as possible will take the opportunity to come along and enjoy the evening.

The performance starts at 7.30pm, 16th October at St Saviour’s Church, Sandpit Lane, St Albans. Contact SASO if you would like a ticket, www.SASO.org.uk or phone 01727 857422.  Tickets start at £1 for under 18s, up to £10-£14 for adults.

Butterfly World, St Albans,  will welcome David Bellamy this Sunday 10th October. David, the well-known conservationist, is patron to Butterfly World and will be there in person to meet visitors. David will speak about the decline in the butterfly species and ways that we can help reverse the situation. Maybe it is not all bad news! The Very Hungry Caterpillar will also be wandering around…

David will speak at 2pm and 4pm in the Garden Room (near cafe). While you are there, don’t miss the Tropical Butterfly House and the Future Gardens as they are a wonderful experience. The little shop is great too as it has a vast range of Hungry Caterpillar products.  We would welcome your feedback on your experience of Butterfly World.

Melissa Caneppele painted masterpieces on children’s faces last Sunday, 26th September. Melissa was not alone in providing fun for the family. From giant games and circus tricks, to sport activites and rickshaw rides, there was a vibrant atmosphere in St Peter’s Street for the all-important Car-free Event run by the St Albans City and District Council.

The aim is to encourage people to leave their cars at home and try out a different form of transport. If you were short of ideas, there was plenty of inforfmation provided about car-sharing, cycling to work and lots more. The Cycle Campaigners had a ‘bright’ presence with their bikes, information leaflets, Rickshaw and electronic bike. Historic walking tours and bikes races took place and even Dr Bike was there to check your bike for free.

This event coincides with the National Car-free day, 22nd September. ‘Let World Car-free Day be a showcase for just how our cities might look like, feel like, and sound like without cars…365 days a year.’(www.worldcarfree.net).

The St Albans District Council is committed to achieving a 60% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2025 and thankfully next year they aim to close off St Peter’s Street for the day, from traffic!’

That will indeed be a beautiful, serene sight for our ancient, historic city. If only it could last….

PDD_0136Last year, an ambitious new opera came to St Albans, premiering in the Abbey, the opera told the little known story of Alban himself, the first English martyr. After a sell out run, Alban the Opera is travelling to London for four nights only in October this year before heading to the US in 2011. A community opera mixing top professionals with enthusiasts and amateurs, Alban was written deliberately to include a large adult chorus. There are still a few places available in the group chorus for the London performances – a fantastic chance to share the stage with the likes of top opera professionals Louise Mott and Philip Salmon in the beautiful environs of St Alban the Martyr in Holborn. The performances are from Wednesday 20th to Saturday 23rd October and the time commitment for rehearsals is very reasonable.
Hazel Ireson, producer of Alban, said: “This really is a once in a lifetime’s experience – it is such an exciting project working with professionals with the highest artistic standards. The choruses are a vital part of the fast moving story and we’re really looking forward to welcoming new singers to be part of this fantastic event.”
The opera tells the story of Alban, a doctor and family man, living in Roman occupied Verulamium (later St Albans) when, one night, he is interrupted by a knock on his door. The decision Alban makes that fateful night begins a chain reaction ending in the destruction of a man and the heartbreak of his family. The dramatic and fast moving story is told using intimate scenes of family life interspersed with great crowd choruses in market places and court rooms, with the audience joining in at the climax of the opera.
Those who are interested in taking part are invited to visit www.albanopera.org.uk, email Hazel directly on admin@albanopera.org.uk or phone 01582 832312

Alban is performed nightly at 7.30pm at St Alban the Martyr, Brooke Street, London EC1N 7RD from Wednesday 20 to Saturday 23 October.

Tickets cost £16 and £8 for children under 16 and can be booked over the telephone on 0844 412 4317 or online at www.albanopera.org.uk .

Tickets can also be purchased in person from the Peacock Theatre, WC2.
